Skin 101 - Understanding PIH

What is hyperpigmenation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to excess melanin production in the skin, which can take different forms: age spots, PIE, PIH, melasma, etc.. The key to treating it is figuring out what type you have. For now, let’s focus on Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (or PIH). PIH happens when injured skin makes extra melanin as it heals - this is common after acne, but sun exposure during healing can make it worse.

When looking for skin care products to treat and prevent hyperpigmentation, look for ingredients that:

  • Encourage cell turnover (exfoliate dead skin cells)

  • Reduce melanin production

  • Block UV rays

Here are some great ingredients to target PIH:

  • Retinoids

  • SPF 30+ (mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin)

  • Kojic Acid

  • Tranexamic Acid

  • Azelaic Acid

  • Niacinamide

  • Vitamin C

  • Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid

  • Licorice Root Extract

But don't overwhelm your skin! You don’t need everything on this list. Choose 2-3 ingredients to use in your routine. For example Azelaic Acid + Vitamin C Serum + SPF in the morning and Retinoid OR Glycolic Acid at night. In the morning, your goal is to heal, protect and prevent. Meanwhile, in the evening, your goal is to renew.
